Defining the “AI Free” Label in Recruitment

Latest news

We are starting to see labels like “No AI”, “Human made”, and “Human in the loop” appear across tech, legal and creative industries. It raises an interesting question for recruitment.

If we were to introduce an “AI free” label, what would it actually cover. Would it mean no AI screening CVs, no automated rejections, no AI led interviews or no AI generated shortlists. Or would it simply mean that AI can assist but humans make the final decision.

The challenge is that almost every agency already claims that.

Where Trust Breaks in the Hiring Process

This is where the definition becomes important. The moment a candidate is rejected, progressed or assessed without a human who has actually read their story, trust breaks.

In critical hires such as a CISO, a Head of AI or a Cloud Architect, very few people would be comfortable with a shortlist that no human curated. Equally, most candidates would not want to be screened by an agent that never asked a follow up question or understood the nuance behind their experience.

What an “AIFree” Label Would Need to Guarantee

From our perspective, an “AI free” label in recruitment would need to mean something very specific. A named human was responsible for every consequential decision. Not just the final approval but the steps that shape the outcome. Who gets progressed. Who gets rejected. Who gets spoken to. Who gets represented. These are the moments where judgement matters and where accountability needs to be clear.

This is also where business models differ. Not every agency operates the same way. Some rely heavily on volume, automation and AI led screening because their model depends on scale. We have always chosen a different path. Our work sits in niche, complex IT requirements where longstanding relationships and deep context consistently outperform volume driven throughput. We have built our network over years of working closely with specialists, not by automating the first conversation.

AI brings undeniable advantages in data, metrics and process efficiency. We use it where it genuinely improves the experience for clients and candidates. But we do not believe in tools that position themselves as AI recruiters or AI led hiring engines.

In our world, technology supports the work. It does not replace the responsibility of understanding a person’s story or the nuance behind a critical hire.

The Real Question for Clients and Candidates

The question for clients is whether an “AI free” process increases trust or simply slows things down.

For candidates, the question is whether they are comfortable being screened and interviewed by AI, especially when the stakes are high.

The industry is moving quickly and the technology is improving, but the expectations around fairness, transparency and human oversight are not going away.
