When it comes to freelance SAP work, one size rarely fits all. Contract length is more than a scheduling detail—it can shape the entire freelance experience, from income planning and work-life balance to career growth and mental well-being.
So, we put the question out to the SAP community on LinkedIn:
“What’s your ideal contract length as an SAP contractor?”
Here’s what the community said:
- 12+ months – 60%
- 6 months – 21%
- Project-based only – 15%
- 3 months (extendable) – 4%
Over 60% of respondents said long-term contracts are their ideal – and that tells us a lot about what’s going on in today’s SAP freelance landscape.
So why the clear preference for 12+ months?
Based on what we see day-to-day as a recruitment agency in this space, here are some likely reasons:
- Stability in an unstable world
Many SAP contractors are seeking continuity in a volatile market. A 12+ month contract offers peace of mind knowing you don’t have to start the search again every quarter.
- Deeper impact, more ownership
Longer engagements allow consultants to embed into teams, build trust, and drive outcomes, not just deliver quick fixes.
- Avoiding the admin fatigue
Bouncing from one short gig to another means more paperwork, more onboarding, more learning curves, and more uncertainty. Contractors with families, mortgages, or international tax situations often lean toward longer, cleaner engagements.
But what about the 15% who prefer project-based only?
These are the consultants who thrive on variety. They enjoy the freedom, the ability to choose projects that interest them, and the agility to pivot when something new arises.
They may also be highly specialized experts brought in for very specific phases—cutovers, migrations, hypercare. For them, short and sharp is the ideal model.
And the 4% who chose 3-month (extendable) contracts?
This small slice likely values flexibility and control. They want to test the waters—on both sides. It’s also common in regions or companies where shorter engagements are standard and extensions are the norm.
But this group also faces more risk—if the extension doesn’t happen, they’re back to square one with little notice.
What should clients take from this?
SAP contractors work across a wide range of industries, project scopes, and delivery models, and naturally, different projects require different types of engagements. Some companies need short bursts of expertise; others seek long-term stability. There’s no one-size-fits-all.
But what’s interesting about these poll results is what they reveal about the talent pool itself. A significant majority of contractors are clearly leaning toward longer-term engagements. For clients, that’s a valuable insight: if you’re only offering short contracts, you may be narrowing your access to a broader pool of highly skilled professionals who are seeking more stability and longer-term impact.
Understanding how contractor preferences align with your project needs could be the key to unlocking better talent, stronger delivery, and smoother collaboration in the long run.
